Green light for Yeovil District Hospital multi-storey car park 17 September 2015

A new car park for Yeovil District Hospital has now been given the go ahead after local councillors unanimously approved the planning application for a 654 space multi-storey car park.

As part of a strategic estates partnership with Interserve Prime, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has ambitious plans to improve its hospital site, including the addition of a new Health and Social Care campus. The multi-storey car park is a pivotal project for the future development plans of the site, not only improving the quality and capacity of parking for patients, visitors and staff but also freeing up other land on the site for redevelopment and new patient services.

Somerset County Council’s planning committee voted in support of the Trust’s application for the car park, subject to a S278 Agreement with the Highways Authority for a new road that will link Higher Kingston and the A37 to ease congestion and improve traffic flow around the hospital. Plans for a new link road are well advanced and expected to be concluded in the Autumn.

Ben Gwilliam, Development Manager at Prime, said: ‘We are delighted that plans have been unanimously approved by the council. Feedback from a consultation with hospital staff and the local community earlier in the year led to a number of improvements that we made to the design before submitting our application. We look forward to starting work on this gateway project, which will be opening the door for many new exciting changes at the hospital.’

Final approvals and legal/funding works are expected to complete before the end of the year so that construction of the new link road and car park can begin in January 2016, with the new car park operational at the start of 2017.
