Westport
- Michael Ring, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development
Prime has never been afraid of challenging projects and the new 2,500sqm Westport Primary Care Centre in Ireland, is a case in point. One of 14 new centres being constructed for client the Health Service Executive (HSE), the steeply sloping site is enclosed by residential buildings, including a sub-station, as well as cycle and pedestrian walkways. Despite these site challenges, the team is set to deliver a scheme that will bring together a wide range of services for the local PCT.
With the HSE having already drawn up designs and gained planning, Prime’s role was to deliver best value, including future-proofing the design to flex with changing clinical services and ensuring optimal space planning.
One of the keys modifications recommended was to the main stairwell in order to facilitate improved circulation throughout the floor above. This enabled the team to improve the functionality of waiting areas and create a centralised play area on the ground floor. Improvements were also made to increase the amount of natural daylight in some rooms by reducing exterior overhangs and increasing window sizes, making areas such as meeting rooms light, bright and ultimately, more user-friendly. In addition, a number of suggestions were made to increase staff comfort from improved changing areas to dedicated WC and rest facilities for ambulance crews.
The new centre is due to open in the spring of 2018 and will serve Westport’s 5,500 residents and those in the surrounding area.
