Dungarvan Primary Care Centre

Situated on the mouth of the Colligan River, the thriving market town of Dungarvan is home to more than 8,000 people and major manufacturing facilities such as GlaxoSmithKline and Radley Engineering.

The town will be benefitting from a new Primary Care Centre (PCC) being built for client the Health Service Executive (HSE) in collaboration with Prime, Balfour Beatty and HICL Infrastructure Company Ltd. The PCC will be adjacent to Dungarvan Community Hospital and is being built in the grounds of Dungarvan Workhouse, a protected structure.

The building is set over three floors with a central atrium offering a modern and clean design. 3,831sqm in size, the centre will offer a number of services to the local and surrounding areas including GPs, community nursing, podiatry, dental, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech and language therapy, as well as home help services and mental health support.

Prime worked with the HSE to ensure innovation in design – from quality and functionality to future proofing. Using its extensive healthcare experience, the team at Prime was able to create a more welcoming building that will improve the overall patient and staff experience. Recommendations included improvements to wayfinding, enhancing staff facilities as well as improving outside areas.

The lifts were previously hidden on entry, so by moving their location, patient wayfinding will be improved. Re-designing the internal layout has also allowed for an additional WC and improved staff welfare areas on the second floor.

With the centre offering mental health services, the dedicated reception was given an improved waiting area, and by moving the PCC south by 1metre we were able to significantly increase the separation between the building and the site boundary, enhancing privacy as well as increasing the size of a small mental health garden space.

The team at Prime has worked from the ground up to create a modern and sustainable building with every aspect of its functionality considered to offer patients and staff a stress-free experience.
