Ballymote
- Will Bilbrough, Development Director at Prime
Ballymote in southern Sligo may be steeped in history with its magnificent Norman castle, but this small town with a population of around 1,500 is transforming its health care facilities with a new, modern 2,500sqm primary care centre. It is part of a major primary care programme which will see 14 new centres constructed for client the Health Service Executive (HSE).
Located less than 0.5km from the town centre, the two-storey building uses a mix of materials to create a crisp modern design, while the layout provides flexibility for the future and a design that can flex to meet changing patient demographics and clinical need.
It is anticipated that the new centre will provide a wide range of community-based services, such as GP services, dental, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and public health nursing
The HSE had already taken the project through design and planning before then asking Prime to review the plans to ensure best value, innovation, quality and future proofing. At Ballymote, the two-storey building had a fairly simply footprint, however the team was still able to recommend a number of changes which add value to the scheme.
These included spatial changes on the ground floor to improve patient flow and accommodate additional space in the patient waiting area, as well as creating a link between the inside and an external children’s play space. Upstairs, a re-assessment of multi-purpose rooms and storage, gave way to more patient seating, while natural daylight was also improved.
The review of Ballymote is a good reflection of what is a truly collaborative project which has seen all partners in the consortium the HSE, Prime, Balfour Beatty and HICL Infrastructure Company Ltd working closely to deliver not only a ‘future proof’ primary care centre for the residents of Ballymote and the surrounding area, but one which represents value, quality and innovation.
